Renowned sitar master Peter van Gelder and his group <http://petervangelder.com/> will present music of India. The versatile Van Gelder once played saxophone and bass guiter with The Great Society, a rock music group of the 60s that accompanied Grace Slick. Later he traveled to India and remained to study sitar with one of the great masters, Maestro Ali akbar Khan. Instrumental in founding the Ali Akbar College of Music, van Gelder became a junior sitar instructor and continued his studies, winning an A.I.

Wine County Ragtime Music Festival

On Saturday, October 11, at 1:00 pm the Sonoma Valley Regional Library is hosting five ragtime musicians and ensembles as a part of the Wine County Ragtime Festival.  These nationally known artists will perform, answer questions, and educate Sonomans about this unique American music genre

The line-up begins at 1:00 with Tom Brier and the Saloon Sweeties;

1:30 with Larisa Migachyov;

2:00 with Dave Tucker;

2:30 with Monty Suffern; and

3:00 with John Partridge.

Local composer and conductor, John Partridge will discuss the origins and development of “ragtime music”.  Rag time is a uniquely American type of music that took the world by storm in the 1890’s.  

“This presentation will be a great introduction to prepare people for the Wine County Ragtime Festival that starts the following weekend” says Partridge.
