Along the River by Adeline Yen Mah
Review by Anna D., Sonoma Valley, 8th grade

Along the River by Adeline Yen Mah is about Zhang Mei Lan.  Set in Ancient China, this novel tells the story of Zhang Meu Lan, and the orphaned servant boy that comes to help her family, Ah Zhao, who is an amazing artist.  Ah Zhao becomes Zhang Mei Lan's friend, but their friendship is constantly tested by the expectations of Ancient China.

I liked this book because it was fascinating to hear how life was in China then.  It's so different that I have a hard time imagining it.  I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys historical fiction, or anyone interested in learning more about Ancient China.
