Teen Book Review: The Aviary

The Aviary by Kathleen O'Dell

Review by Anna, Sonoma Valley Branch

The Aviary is a historical fiction novel about eleven-year-old Clara, and the mystery that revolves around the Glendoveer mansion.  Mrs. Glendoveer loves her five pet birds as much as she would with her own children.  But it isn't until Clara speaks to the birds, and they speak back, that Clara uncovers a half-century-old mystery.  With the help of her newfound friend, Daphne, Clara discovers all the secrets about her and Mrs. Glendoveer's past.

The Aviary's first hundred pages are hard to get through, but the book turns out to be really interesting and full of suspense until the end.  I did like this book, although it wasn't my favorite.  I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries or historical fiction.

Teen Book Review: Deviant

Deviant by Adrian McKinty

Review by Alex, Sonoma Valley

Danny Lopez moves to Cobalt, Colorado from Las Vegas, Nevada.  He meets his neighbor and they become good friends.  He is also part of a club called The Watchers.  They normally just watch the Secret Scripture Union but they have currently been focusing on some recent deaths of cats.  Danny figures out a way to catch the cat killer but something goes very wrong with his plan.
Why I picked it up:  I've always loved mystery books and this one sounded unusual and interesting.
Why I finished it:  The book was very well written and it kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the whole time I was reading it.
I'd recommend it to:  Anyone who enjoys mysteries with a lot of twists.
