Pay Online


Sonoma County Library cardholders can now pay Library fines and fees online. MasterCard

How can I pay online?

From the Library home page, click the My Account tab. Then click Pay Online in the blue stripe below the tabs.

  • To log in, you will need to enter:
    • Your Sonoma County Library card number
    • The four-digit PIN for your Library accountVISA
  • To make a payment, you will need to enter:
    • Your credit card number
    • Credit card expiration date
    • Amount you wish to pay

What forms of payment are accepted for online payments?

The Library accepts MasterCard and VISA cards. You may use either a credit card or a debit card with the MasterCard or VISA symbol. Payments with debit cards are treated as credit card transactions (you do not get asked for your debit card PIN).

Can I use PayPal for my online payment?

No, our system does not currently support payments via PayPal.

Can I make a donation to the Library with the online payment system?

No, Pay Online is currently unable to process donations.

There is a separate system to make an online donation to the Library Foundation.

Can I pay online if my library card is from Lake or Mendocino County?

No, the online payment system is available for Sonoma County Library patrons only.

Can I pay with a credit card inside the library?

Yes. To pay by credit card in the library, use the Pay Online system on any library catalog PC or Internet computer. Staff at Library service desks can only accept cash and checks. Library catalog PCs and Internet computers are available for public use at all Sonoma County regional libraries.

Is a service fee charged when paying fines online?

No. Sonoma County Library does not add a service charge when you pay fines or fees online.

Is there a minimum fine amount that can be paid online?

No, you may pay any fine amount that you owe. The system will automatically display the exact amount you currently owe for late materials. To pay a lower amount, click in the amount box, delete the amount shown, and type in the amount you want to pay.

Be aware, though, that small transactions like 10 cents are unusually low for credit card purchases.  If you use this system to pay small amounts, your bank or credit card company may call you to ask if this is a fraudulent transaction.  To avoid these calls, we suggest using this system only for amounts of $1 or more.

Is there a maximum fine amount that can be paid online?

Yes, you may only pay up to the amount you currently owe for late materials. You cannot pay online for accrued fines on overdue items that you have not yet returned. You cannot "deposit" an extra amount above what the system automatically displays for your current amount owed.

Why do the fines I just paid still appear in My Account?

You must "refresh" that screen. When you do, it will accurately reflect your payment.

How do I get a receipt when I pay my fines online?

Please print out the receipt that shows on your screen when you finish your transaction. This is the only receipt you will receive.

What if I receive an error message?

You may see an error message if:

  • You try to pay more than you owe.
    What to do: Go back to the payment page and type in a lower amount.
  • You mistype your library card number.
    What to do: Go back to the login page and try again.
  • The PIN you entered doesn't match the PIN we have on file in your records.
    What to do: Please visit your local library to have your account updated, or request a change of PIN using this account update request form.

What happens if I receive a message that the transaction was declined?

Nothing will be charged to your credit card account, and Library fines and fees will remain on your Library account.

What if I pay online for a lost book or video, then find it and return the item?

Your Library account will be credited. You can choose to leave that credit on your account, or receive your refund in cash. We will not be able to issue a credit to your MasterCard or VISA account. Library staff can only give refunds in cash.

What security measures do you use to protect my Library account and credit card account?

The Library's online payment system is secured by a Thawte SSL certificate, which means that all information you enter is transmitted in encrypted form.

The online payment website, where you enter your information, is available over the Internet. All data in your Library account and all records of your credit card payment are stored on separate servers that are not available over the Internet. Financial information is only handled in encrypted form.

No credit card information is stored in your Library account. No information about your Library card is sent to the credit card payment processor.

Once I enter my credit card information, will the system automatically "remember" it?

No, each time you pay online, you will need to enter your credit card information. Your credit card information is never stored in your Library account.
