Leza Lowitz was born in San Francisco in 1962 and grew up in Berkeley, California. After attending NYU's Dramatic Writing Program, she returned to California and received her B.A. in English Literature from U.C. Berkeley in 1984. In 1986 she received an M.A. in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Lowitz first made her way to Tokyo in 1989, where she worked as a freelance writer/editor for the Japan Times and the Asahi Evening News, and as an art critic for Art in America.
