Shakuhachi: The Japanese Bamboo Flute - Elliott Kallen

Saturday, July 12, 2014, at 2:00 p.m.

Come join us for an introduction to the haunting sounds of the shakuhachi, a traditional end-blown bamboo flute from Japan. Often called the most expressive musical instrument – aside from the human voice - the Japanese bamboo flute, though its origins are ancient, is as much at home as a tool of Zen meditation as it is in traditional Japanese ensemble music and the experiment sounds of the avant garde.

Friends of the Petaluma Library Art Series Summer 2014
July 26, 2014 - 2:00pm
FRIENDS OF THE PETALUMA LIBRARY ART LECTURE SERIES 2014 SATURDAYS AT 2:00 P.M. 26 July 2014 Artists in the Rainforest: Creating the Maya World. Presented by Edith Freeman from the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. The ancient Mayan civilization was one of the most fascinating and influential cultures in our world’s history. Factors that make it so interesting are the culture’s curious sophistication and its sudden demise. Lying in the tropical forest of Central America, Mayan cities were vast creations encompassing a complex society far ahead of its time. From 300 to 800 of the Christian Era these cities flourished in a state of extensive scientific and artistic enlightenment. They designed daring and enduring architecture in cities and ceremonial centers; portrayals of war, ritual,+ and belief; monumental and intimate renderings of the noble and the lowly in ceramic, stone, and paint. Mayan artists and master builders created a visual world whose remnants still move us with their perception, power, and imagination. Open to the public free of charge. Funded by the Friends of the Petaluma Library.
