Shakuhachi: The Japanese Bamboo Flute
Saturday, August 9, 2014 - 2:00pm to 3:00pm
Branch:Central Santa Rosa Library
211 E Street
Santa Rosa, CA 95404
Come join us for an introduction to the haunting sounds of the Shakuhachi. Often called the most expressive musical instrument (aside from the human voice), the Japanese bamboo flute, though its origins are ancient, is as much at home as a tool of Zen meditation as it is in traditional Japanese ensemble music and the experimental sounds of the avant garde. Elliot Kallen, a well-known Sonoma County performer and teacher of the shakuhachi, will tell the story of this fascinating flute, putting it in context with its music, performing selections of different styles that span hundreds of years.
