Saint hails from Stockton, CA. His writing journey began in high school constructing love poems
to girls he was afraid to talk to. He started to develop his craft more in his father’s church
doing pieces for the congregation. The response was great but he felt that he had more to say
and wanted to reach a broader audience. A few years ago, a nationwide spoken word competition called
Step To The Mic came to the valley and he has never looked back. Since then,
he has released a cd and has performed all over California. His style infuses humor, passion,
and ideals which inspire as well as entertain. He is also an accomplished singer, songwriter,
and actor and has taken 1st place in many slam competitions. He has opened for hip-hop artist
Talib Kweli and has instructed in several writing workshops for young people in high schools
and youth centers. He brings a fresh perspective to an old art form.
For the poetry slam, there is a limit of 1 poem per round, with a time limit of 3 minutes. There will be 3 rounds. Bring 3 poems. The timer begins as soon as the contestant begins to speak.
The poetry slam is a solo event. There shall be no accompaniment of any kind. Slam is judged on content and performance.
Each slam will have an open microphone session prior to the Poetry Slam, except for the Grand Slam at the Central branch. At the open mic, 1 poem, by any poet, may be read, with a time limit of 3 minutes.
Contestants may not participate in both the open microphone and the poetry slam. They must choose one or the other.
Third place winners may compete at other poetry slams.
First and second place prize winners may not compete again until the Grand Slam at the Central Santa Rosa library. They are welcome to participate again at any open mic session at the other branches.
5 slam judges will be selected randomly from the audience and must be 16 years or older, and must be able to produce proof of eligibility. Judges may not be slam participants. The emcee and library staff person can stand in as judges if needed.
