- Local History Photos at the Library
- Search the Sonoma County Library catalog for photos in the Petaluma Regional Library and Santa Rosa Central Library. Type a search word, then select Photograph from the Limits menu below.
North Bay Digital at Sonoma State- Featuring the Gaye LeBaron Digital Collection, Lime Kiln photos, 1906 earthquake photos and letters.
National and worldwide sources
- American Memory
- From the Library of Congress. Over 9 million items including photographs, documents, and more, plus video and sound recordings from American history. Includes Curtis collection of photos of Pomo, Miwok, and other Native American tribes and lands.
Calisphere- From the California Digital Library, search for pictures from art exhibits, photo collections, and other materials from libraries, parks, universities, and museums in California.
Dreamstime and morgueFile- Free photo images can be used for most purposes. Also includes commercial images available for purchase.
Europeana- The European archive of copyright-free materials from the Louvre, the Rijksmuseum, the British Library, and other European museums and cultural institutions.
Flickr Commons- Featuring photos with no known copyright restrictions. Thousands of images contributed by the Library of Congress, with Flickr tags contributed by you.
Google Images- Search for pictures that are on other people's web sites. Pictures vary in size and quality. Not a good source for copyright-free images to use in projects.
Internet Archive- Entire books, movies, sound, live music archive. Because the books are generally older works that have fallen out of copyright, images may be copied from them without restriction.
Library of Congress Prints & Photographs Catalog- Historical posters, maps, photos. From the collections of the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division. Search by topic, or select from the list of collections.
Microsoft Office Clip Art & Media- May be used in homework and reports. For other uses, see the Microsoft Copyrights page.
NYPL Digital Gallery- New York Public Library collection of historical maps, vintage posters, rare prints and photographs, and more. Includes images from art, science, and history.
Wikimedia Commons- Public domain contemporary photographs donated by photographers; historical photographs; art historical photographs.

- America's Library
- Children's area from the Library of Congress. Sections include: Explore the States, Meet Famous Americans, Jump Back in Time. Songs and games to play, along with pictures and information useful for homework.
Dorling Kindersley clip art- For personal, home and school use.
Homework databases- Pick from several resources for maps and pictures of famous people, California missions, wildlife, and a variety of topics in the World Book encyclopedia.
