INTERLIBRARY LOAN (ILL)

What is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan is a service that allows you to borrow items we don't own from libraries across the United States.  Items that are lent to us come with a due date determined by the lending library and can sometimes come with restrictions, such as an item being designated as In Library Use Only. We are grateful to the national network of libraries that allows us to offer this service to the public. 

Before You Make A Request

  1. Make sure to first check our Library Catalog to see if we have a copy of the title you need.
  2. Try placing your requests through LINK+
  3. You can only make a request for books published at least twelve months ago (to the month), periodical/newspaper articles and microfilm.  Media (DVDs, CDs, Audiobooks, and Video Games) and electronic resources cannot be requested through Interlibrary Loan (Try placing your requests through LINK+. )
  4. This service typically takes 2-6 weeks to fill requests.

How do I request items through Interlibrary Loan?

We can take requests from Sonoma County Library card holders only.  How to get a library card

The best way to place an Interlibrary loan request is to search our catalog first. If the item is not in our catalog, you can initiate a request from the link in the catalog. 

 How to request a title from Worldcat
 1. With a valid Sonoma County Library card
 2. Access the Worldcat search page
 3. Search for the book you want
 4. Click on the book title
 5. Click on the green button that says "Request It"
 6. Fill out the form

 

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take for an Interlibrary Loan request to get to me?
2-6 weeks. Some items may arrive faster, but there is no expedited service with interlibrary loan.

How many requests can I have?
You can have 3 active requests at once. This includes items at all stages of the interlibrary loan transaction from the time you submit the request to the time you return the item to the circulation desk to be checked back in. 

Can Interlibrary Loan items be renewed?

Some items may be eligible for a three week renewal. Please contact your local library or the interlibrary loan office to see if your item can be renewed with the owning library.

Is there a charge for use of your Interlibrary Loan Service?

No, there is no charge to submit a request or for the use of an Interlibrary Loan item. Lost or damaged items are subject to a $25 placeholder fee until the lending library determines the actual amount.  For a lost item, you will be charged the full price of the item as determined by the lending library. For a damaged item, the lending library will review the extent of the damage and if the item is still usable in their collection. You will be responsible for any damage fee as determined by the lending library.

How will I be notified that my Interlibrary Loan request is in?
You will be notified the same way as your Sonoma County Library holds. We contact you either by phone, e-mail or postal mail. If you would like to change the way you are currently notified, please contact the circulation desk at your library branch or click here to request a change to or from e-mail notification.

What is a “recall?”

Interlibrary Loan items are subject to being recalled at any time by the lending library. This means the lending library has an unanticipated and immediate need to have the item back. If we are notified of a recall, we will contact you to ask that you return the item as soon as possible and the original due date will be retracted.

Can I track the status of my Interlibrary Loan request?

You will be called or emailed when your requested item is available, but at this time we don’t have the technical capability to notify you of the status as the request is filled, shipped, returned, etc. or to allow you to check on the status of your request. If you need to check the status, contact the Interlibrary Loan Department.
