¡Celebrando Juneteenth en el condado de Sonoma!

Desde el 19 de junio de 1865, cuando las noticias de la Proclamación de Emancipación de 1862, efectivo el 1 de enero de 1863, llegaron al estado esclavista de de Texas, en la conclusión de la Guerra Civil, el 19th de junio, O Juneteenth se ha celebrado en varias partes del país para conmemorar el fin de la esclavitud en los Estados Unidos. Los restos de esclavitud se quedaban en algunos estados antes confederados más allá de la fecha del 19th de junio, sin embargo, es decir, esos estados no abolían oficialmente la esclavitud dentro de su jurisdicción hasta más tarde. El Condado de Sonoma no fue inmune a los debates sobre la esclavitud durante ese tiempo, con proponentes vociferantes y opositores de la esclavitud y la Confederación en Petaluma, Santa Rosa y otros lugares.
En 2021 el Presidente Biden proclamó el 19th de junio, Juneteenth, un feriado nacional. Incluso antes de su reconocimiento oficial, Juneteenth ha sido celebrado durante mucho tiempo por las comunidades negras en los EE.UU. Únete a celebrar el Mes de Orgullo LGBTQ+ este junio, que nos ofrece tiempo para promover la autoafirmación, dignidad, igualdad, y mayor notoriedad de la comunidad LGBTQ+.
Los últimos años han incluido desafíos significativos para los miembros de nuestra comunidad queer. Además del impacto de la pandemia de COVID-19, las personas LGBTQ+ en los Estados Unidos también se han enfrentado a una legislación anti-trans y anti-queer generalizada, así como a prohibiciones de libros. La condena y el borrado de las vidas y experiencias queer tiene un costo devastador para la salud mental, la salud física y el bienestar de la comunidad queer.
Han pasado más de 50 años desde los disturbios de Stonewall, pero la lucha por los derechos queer aún continúa. Here + Queer, Sonoma County es un proyecto que archiva y amplía las historias de las comunidades de lesbianas, gays, bisexuales, transgénero y queer (LGBTQ+) del condado de Sonoma. A lo largo de la historia, las personas LGBTQ+ han luchado por la igualdad, la representación y la dignidad en la sociedad.
Here + Queer se esfuerza por resaltar las historias ricas y dinámicas de la cultura y el activismo queer, para documentar las luchas y alegrías de la vida queer.
Este proyecto acepta contenido digital en forma de narrativas personales, ensayos, anécdotas, fotografías, trabajos creativos, material audiovisual, y más. El proyecto busca activamente materiales de la comunidad: todas las edades y orígenes, de todos los períodos de tiempo en la historia del condado de Sonoma. Se acepta contenido digital anónimo, y envíos en inglés y español.

Celebrating Juneteenth in Sonoma County!

Since June 19, 1865, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862, effective January 1, 1863, reached the slaveholding state of Texas at the conclusion of the Civil War, June 19th, or Juneteenth, has been celebrated in various parts of the country to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Remnants of slavery lingered in some formerly Confederate states beyond the June 19th date, however, meaning those states did not officially abolish slavery within their jurisdiction until later. Sonoma County was not immune from the debates about slavery during that time, with vociferous proponents and opponents of slavery and the Confederacy in Petaluma, Santa Rosa and elsewhere.
In 2021 President Biden proclaimed June 19th, Juneteenth, a national holiday. Even before its official recognition, Juneteenth has long been celebrated by Black communities in the U.S. Beloved foster parent and faith leader Marteal Perry brought the celebration to Sonoma County from her hometown of Alta, Texas when she moved to Santa Rosa in 1953, hosting Juneteenth, or “Mother Perry’s Day,” for county residents at her South Wright Road property year after year.
In recognition of Juneteenth, Sonoma County Library is highlighting resources and events celebrating the holiday. This year we are specially featuring recommended readings and websites about some traditions (cooking, art, and storytelling) associated with Juneteenth. Our resources also include current reflections and conversations about Emancipation and what it means with respect to Black farming, land tenure and contemporary concerns about reparations.

Central Santa Rosa Library will be tabling an event for the 52nd annual MLK/Juneteenth Community Festival on Saturday, June 18, 2022 from 10 am to 6 pm, at MLK Park in Santa Rosa. The library will be providing library card sign ups and have a small collection of books available for both check out and as giveaways. We will have flyers and pamphlets available that showcase the plethora of resources that Sonoma County Library has available, as well as giveaways for children, teens and adults. We will also be using SonomaFi Connect to provide free wi-fi to at least 50 individuals during the festival.
On Saturday, June 18, 2022, from 4 pm to 7pm, the Bibliobus, the mobile tech hub of the county library system will be at the Sonoma Juneteenth: Freedom Day event at the Sonoma Community Center in the city of Sonoma. Register for a library card and check out books and media related to Juneteenth, Emancipation, and the enormous, foundational influence of African Americans on the U.S. economy, its agriculture, foodways, cuisine, music, art, and culture. Escolar es un recurso en español para los nativos del español, para los estudiantes bilingües y para los estudiantes que están aprendiendo español.
Existen dos niveles distintos de contenido único: Primaria y Secundaria, los cuales ofrecen información de interés para cada estudiante. Las llamativas páginas de inicio para cada nivel permiten el acceso a miles de artículos, imágenes, videos, mapas y tablas, y muchas son actualizadas diariamente. Join us in celebrating Pride Month this June, which serves as a time to promote the self-affirmation, dignity, equality, and increased visibility of the LGBTQ+ community.
The last several years have posed significant challenges for our queer community members. In addition to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, LGBTQ+ people across the United States have also faced widespread anti-trans and anti-queer legislation, as well as book bans. The condemnation and erasure of queer lives and experiences comes with a devastating cost to the mental health, physical health, and well-being of the queer community.
It has been over 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, but the fight for queer rights is still ongoing. To help ensure that queer joys and struggles are never erased, Sonoma County Library is launching new opportunities for queer people to add to the shared history of our county and to connect with each other. We are also actively working to make sure that our collections, programs, and services reflect, represent, and uplift the lives and experiences of queer people. Our library branches are spaces where the queer community will always be welcomed and celebrated, not just during Pride Month, but every day.

Share your pride. Reclaim your history. Connect with your community.
Here + Queer, Sonoma County collects, archives, and amplifies the histories of Sonoma County’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) communities. Throughout history, LGBTQ+ people have fought for equality, representation, and dignity in society.
Here + Queer strives to uncover the rich and dynamic stories of queer culture and activism, documenting the struggles and joys of queer life.
This project accepts digital content in the form of personal narratives, essays, anecdotes, photographs, creative works, audiovisual material, and more. The project actively seeks submissions from all ages and backgrounds, from all time periods in Sonoma County history. Anonymous submissions are supported, as well as submissions in English and Spanish.
Your stories will empower, enrich, and deepen our understanding of queer communities. This project launches this June 2022, and will continue beyond Pride Month.

What did gender non-conformity look like in this area during the 1970s and 80s? How did Sonoma County help stop a national anti-LGBT movement? Why did teenage girls at Los Guillicos riot in the early 1950s?
Explore the community building, cultural and social change forged by local LGBTQI+ people during the years 1947 – 2000, and join us for a lively discussion about community and other topics important to North Bay LGBTQI+ life.
Presented by Tina Dungan and Shad Reinstein, LGBTQI+ Historians who together created the Sonoma County LGBTQI+ Timeline.
This program will be in-person at Central Santa Rosa Library, and though registration is encouraged, it is not required. This presentation is intended for teens and adults.
Virtual Pride Club for Teens (ages 13-18)
Every Tuesday at 5pm - Virtual
Join other teens in this weekly club to discuss books and other media that showcase queer voices and experiences. June’s theme is All Things Pride! You can select a book or other media that fits that theme based on recommendations by librarians or choose your own. This club is a great way to make friends, foster community building, and discover queer media all at the same time!

Wine Country’s LGBTQI Film Festival brings to Sonoma County outstanding films that explore the vast diversity of our community and celebrates our unique history. They show a monthly film on the third Thursday of the month at Rialto Cinemas,Sebastopol.
This summer they will be showing the following films:
- Poppy Field - June 9, 1pm & 7pm at the Rialto Cinema, Sebastopol
- This film weaves themes of freedom, art, repression and identity as a Romanian police officer Cristi fights his internal and external identity. His private and public persona is challenged when his unit is called to a volatile anti-LGBTQ+ protest at cinema. The tension between his life with boyfriend Hadi and his in-uniform image spills over during a night of suspense. His ability to hide his sexual orientation challenged by an audience member who recognizes him from a previous encounter. The film is based on an actual event in 2017.
- Mama Bears - June 16, 7PM at the Rialto Cinemas Sebastopol
- This film follows three conservative Christian families confronting the bigotry that is negatively impacting their LGBT+ children by supporting and advocating for them. The film’s subjects are part of the support group named “Mama Bears'' because of the fierceness with which its members fight for their offspring’s rights in statehouses, at school board meetings, and in their places of worship. This film by award-winning director Daresha Kyi is a powerful and poignant story of the transformative power of unconditional love.

This covers a very diverse community with distinct cultures, languages, faiths, and traditions. To celebrate the AAPI community during the month of May and beyond, we’ve put together free virtual and in-person programming and activities; as well as resources that recognize AAPI achievements and contributions and addresses anti-Asian hate. We hope that the following programming and resources will celebrate the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, provide historical context, and offer an avenue for reporting crimes and opening discussions about racism.

Celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with Oliver Chin, author of colorful children's picture book The Year of the Tiger, one of the 12 adventures in the popular annual series Tales From the Chinese Zodiac. Meet Teddy the tiger! Like all kids, Teddy is growing up, blazing his own path, and discovering his true character.

On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous is a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. Join historian Arthur Dawson for an exploration of our Chinese history, the struggles of other marginalized groups, the roles played by locals Charles Stuart and C.C. O’Donnell in fighting or fomenting prejudice, and how this history lives on today.
Jack Ding, Mayor of Sonoma, will conclude the program with remarks about the recognition of the Chinese contributions to Sonoma Valley today.

Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month! Join the Korean Spirit and Cultural Promotion Project (KSCPP) to learn about Korean culture and history. Follow along to make your own beautiful paper and wire Lotus Lantern. The class will conclude with a showing of the short film “Korea Today”. You can watch the trailer by clicking here.

When we see people one of the first things we notice is gender. We tend to categorize people as male or female. But what if the characteristics we used to categorize were fluid, and not rigidly defined? What if there were no gender distinctions? Non-binary and gender fluid depictions have existed in Asian art for thousands of years. The belief in non-duality contributes to these purposely ambivalent portrayals. Explore some of the fascinating ways various Asian cultures have represented people and deities as male, female, and non-binary. This event is presented in English.

The Legend of Auntie Po by Shing Yin Khor
Aware of the racial tumult in the years after the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act, Mei tries to remain blissfully focused on her job, her close friendship with the camp foreman's daughter, and telling stories about Paul Bunyan—reinvented as Po Pan Yin (Auntie Po), an elderly Chinese matriarch. Anchoring herself with stories of Auntie Po, Mei navigates the difficulty and politics of lumber camp work and her growing romantic feelings for her friend Bee. The Legend of Auntie Po is about who gets to own a myth and immigrant families and communities holding on to rituals and traditions while staking out their own place in America.

Archival and Digital Collections
- Verified written reports in compliance with Section 5 of the Alien Land Law of 1920
65 depositions regarding Japanese-owned properties in Sonoma County, filed between 1921 and 1949. The California Alien Land Law prohibited "aliens ineligible for citizenship" from owning agricultural land or possessing long-term leases. It affected the Indian, Japanese, and Korean immigrant farmers in California. Implicitly, the law was primarily directed at the Japanese. - Newspaper Clippings from the Petaluma Argus-Courier of local women and Japanese Americans enlisted in the armed services during World War II. Yoshio Hirooka, George Miyano, Nakamura Leland and Hajime Yoshizawa served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, a unit comprised of Americans of Japanese descent that fought on the European front, becoming “the most decorated unit in U.S. military history for its size and length of service.” (Densho Encyclopedia) Twenty-seven Sonoma County men served in the 442nd, three of whom were killed in action. Mayo es el Mes de la Herencia de los Asiáticos Americanos e Isleños del Pacífico (AAPI), que honra y celebra a los asiático-americanos e isleños del Pacífico en América. Esto cubre una comunidad muy diversa con distintas culturas, idiomas, religiones y tradiciones.
