LumaCon! Returns for Third Year

Submitted by kdeweese on December 27, 2016 - 10:20am

The Third Annual LumaCon! Comic Convention for Youth takes place Saturday, January 28, 2017 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Petaluma Community Center and Lucchesi Park. Over 3,000 people attended last year’s event celebrating creativity and literacy, and this year’s organizers are ready for another big crowd. LumaCon! is a collaborative project created by the librarians of the Sonoma County Library’s Petaluma Regional Library, the Petaluma High School Library, and the Casa Grande High School Library. Admission is free.

The LumaCon! 2017 Artists’ Alley will once again offer an opportunity to meet well-known artists, illustrators and writers of comic books and graphic novels, and give local youth artists the chance to display and sell their artwork alongside established artists. Alexis E. Fajardo ("Kid Beowulf"), Svetlana Chmakova ("Dramacon"), Brian Fies (“Whatever Happened to the World of Tomorrow?”), Paige Braddock (“Jane’s World”), and many others will share their work and their passion about comics, graphic novels, and pop culture publications. Children’s crafts, Live Action Role Play (LARP), a “Magic the Gathering” tournament, and a cosplay (costume) competition for teens are featured activities. Exhibitors include the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Stormtroopers of the 501st Legion, Golden Gate Garrison.

The LumaCon! Fiction Short Story contest for authors 18 years and under is open now! Original fiction and fan-fiction stories can be submitted at www.lumacon.net. Prizes will be awarded the day of LumaCon! in two categories: authors 13 years old and younger, and authors 14-18 years. The deadline for submissions is January 7, 2017.

High school clubs, teen artists, and teen volunteers share their expertise, time, and creativity to run food sales, art, and assist with younger LumaCon! participants. Teens through the public library’s Teen Advisory Council are heavily involved in planning and preparing for the fandom and cosplay events. “I have been to many comic conventions before and am super excited to work on one myself!” says Jackie Friedland, a Casa Grande High School senior.
