Sonoma County Library made Lynda.com available for its cardholders on January 18, 2017. Lynda.com is transitioning to become LinkedIn Learning soon.

LinkedIn Learning will offer more tutorials, more languages and more control over a patron's course history.  More information coming soon.

What is Lynda for Libraries?

Lynda for Libraries is a product Lynda.com offers libraries through which the library can give library customers unlimited access to the complete Lynda training collection using the customers Sonoma County Library cardnumber and pin. 

The only real restriction is a simultaneous use cap that is set at 75 for Sonoma County Library.  This means unlimited access for staff and patrons, but only 75 users can be online using the service simultaneously.

Why is the Library adding Lynda for Libraries Services?

Sonoma County Library is constantly seeking to expand the Digital Resources available to our staff and library customers.  Also, connecting people to information, experiences and experts that help them learn and grow for their own self-education and personal discovery is a major goal of our strategic plan.   

We chose Lynda to provide these online training services because of Lynda’s outstanding reputation in the business community and because Lynda keeps their video offerings and training up-to-date with the latest technology.  By taking Lynda trainings, our customers are taking trainings that make them employable in today’s economy or are exploring their interests with the current experts in their fields of discovery. 

How do customers get started with Lynda for Libraries?

Lynda for Libraries is available by web browser and by mobile app.  Lynda videos may be downloaded to view later when a customer does not have internet access.

how do customers use Lynda for Libraries?

Lynda is a library of training videos.  Courses are as short as 3 minutes (one video) to more extensive series of courses and videos.  Lynda puts a series of videos into Learning Paths so customers have the path to teach themselves how to “Become a …”

Customers can earn Certifications for each Tutorial completed and also for series of Tutorials.  Certifications are Lynda.com Certifications with one exception.  Project Management Certification can be obtained from Project Management Institute for Lynda coursework.

To find a course, customers can browse the list of business, technology and creative course subjects or use the search box.

To use the video training, a customer selects a video and starts watching.  The video player includes various options – the most important to point out is the playback speed.  Speed up the video to finish it in half the time (2x).  Or slow it down to watch something closely.

Each video also offers an Overview, Transcript, View Offline option, and usually Exercise File.  And, even more, each video also offers playlists, bookmarks, course history, a notebook and the ability to print and share Certificates of Completion.
