Together at the Table
Together at the Table is a program series through which Sonoma County Library encourages our community to come together to learn about important topics and to share their thoughts and opinions in a safe space. Together at the Table encourages and facilitates discussion around current issues and topics in the news through a combination of avenues:
- The creation of intentional and physical community spaces for dialogue and reflection in our library branches;
- A curriculum of materials with a wide range of perspectives to encourage inquiry;
- Events and discussions with community partners who provide context on how each topic is being addressed in Sonoma County.
We continue to hold Together at the Table events, with a new focus on intergenerational conversation. We are soliciting suggestions from our community for new topics to explore and discuss together at the systemwide level, and we are embracing other issue-based events and programming to continue to explore topics of social justice together with our communities. Look for quarterly topics and events with community partners to continue the great range of community conversations. 2017-18 Grant Period
Community outreach and feedback from our users helped us to identify civic education and community engagement as an educational need in our county. With that goal in mind, in 2017 library staff wrote a grant and secured $25,000 in federal funding to lead a year-long program of civically-based and culturally-developed content to encourage and facilitate discussion of current issues and topics in the news in 2017 and 2018. The project title derives from Martin Luther King Jr.’s "I Have a Dream" speech, "I have a dream that one day… sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood," inspiring our goal of bringing people together to discuss current civic and cultural topics which affect our community, state, and country.

The Together at the Table project was designed in alignment with the Library’s Strategic Plan and the Portrait of Sonomareport, and its development in 2017-18 was supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian.
