Shakuhachi: The Japanese Bamboo Flute
August 2, 2014 - 2:00pm
Shakuhachi: The Japanese Bamboo Flute - Elliott Kallen Saturday, August 2, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. Come join us for an introduction to the haunting sounds of the shakuhachi, a traditional end-blown bamboo flute from Japan. Often called the most expressive musical instrument – aside from the human voice - the Japanese bamboo flute, though its origins are ancient, is as much at home as a tool of Zen meditation as it is in traditional Japanese ensemble music and the experiment sounds of the avant garde. Elliott Kallen, a well-known Sonoma county performer and teacher of the shakuhachi, will tell the story of this fascinating flute, putting it in context with its music, performing selections of different styles that span hundreds of years. Mr. Kallen is part of a lineage that has its roots in the music of the Komuso, the itinerant Zen monks who used the shakuhachi as a tool for meditation during Japan’s Edo Period (1605 – 1665). A question and answer segment will follow the presentation. The program will be presented in the Helen Putnam Community Room of the Petaluma Regional Library. The public is invited to attend free of charge. The program is being funded by the Friends of the Petaluma Library

Charged Particles: Plugged-In Jazz with a Spark!
August 23, 2014 - 2:30pm
Charged Particles crosses stylistic boundaries and blend multiple traditions to create vital new sounds in the electric jazz arena. The trio's repertoire blends jazz styles with elements from Latin music, classical music, funk, and more. The group's original compositions are mixtures of elaborate orchestration and opportunities for creative improvised solos. And they bring a similar approach to playing arrangements of tunes by other jazz artists and traditional jazz standards, each played with a new twist. performer photo
