FAQs

1. Question: How many finalists are developing proposals for this commission?
   Answer: Six finalists from Round 1 of the Request for Qualifications process were invited to submit a Request for Proposals (RFP).
2. Question: What are the dimensions of the area for the sculpture?
   Answer: The dimensions are 8' 2 1/2" x 17-3 1/2" (longest dimension) and 13' 9 1/4" (shortest dimension with curved curb). See the PDF showing the location and dimensions.
3. Question: Will the donor recognition plaque list all the names of donors, or just major sponsors? How large is the plaque estimated to be?
   Answer: Yes, the donor recognition plaque will include the names of all donors. The final size of the plaque will be determined after the fundraising campaign has concluded. The plaque does not need to be incorporated into the sculpture itself; its design, materials, and placement can be finalized during the design development and installation phases of the project.
4. Question: Is there a minimum or maximum height requirement for the sculpture?
   Answer: There is no prescribed minimum or maximum height requirement for the sculpture. Artists should determine the scale and proportions based on their proposed design and the project budget. The sculpture should complement the architecture and surrounding landscape, serving as an integrated feature of the site rather than competing with the building or its landscape design. Proposals should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of scale, visibility, and the overall visitor experience.
5. Question: Will the library be pouring a footer for the sculpture during the construction phase? And if so, will the artist team selected be able to coordinate the finishing of the foundation?
   Answer: The Library anticipates installing a concrete footer or foundation as part of the overall construction process, however, the timing of the installation will be determined by the Library and the project team to best align with the construction schedule. The selected artist team is expected to coordinate with the Library, architect, contractor, and project team regarding the design, dimensions, anchor requirements, and finishing of the foundation to ensure compatibility with the final artwork.
6. Question: Will the Library be able to host community workshops during the fabrication time frame or will construction prohibit the use of the library?
   Answer: Yes. All community workshops will be held at the temporary Roseland Library located at 470 Sebastopol Road, Santa Rosa, CA 95407.
7. Question: Do the tiles for the "Fund-a-Tile" fundraising campaign need to be different sizes?
   Answer: Yes. The tiles should vary in size to reflect the different giving levels. Donors will have the opportunity to sponsor a tile at the $25, $50, $100, $250, $500, or $1,000 level, and the tile sizes should correspond appropriately to those contribution levels.
8. Question: Is the area to the left of the sculptural mosaic site also available for artwork, i.e., a flat mosaic? (This would be in addition to the sculptural mosaic.)
   Answer: No. For liability and maintenance reasons, the Library is not seeking a flat mosaic installation. The artwork should be limited to the designated sculptural site identified in the RFP. We encourage artists to think creatively about how the sculpture can complement the surrounding architecture and landscape, but we are not considering an additional flat mosaic installation.
9. Question: If it is a possible additional artwork site, what are the dimensions, and is this an interior space or an exterior one?
   Answer: As noted above, the adjacent area is not being offered as an additional artwork site. The commission is limited to the designated exterior sculptural installation area described in the RFP.
10. Question: Could you please clarify what you mean by “donor tiles”? I’m assuming that this does not mean an actual ceramic tile, but rather a section made up of mosaic pieces. These can be different sizes, but do not have to be actual tiles, correct?
    Answer: The donor tiles must be actual individual tiles of varying sizes, with the size of each tile corresponding to the donor’s giving level. Ideally, each donor will be represented by one tile. The artist may determine how the tiles are incorporated into the overall design, but the requirement for distinct tile sizes based on giving level is not optional.
